Maxigro frost protection fabric is made of polypropylene as this material does not absorb moisture but allows rainfall and sunlight (the building blocks of healthy plant life) to pass through. Though polypropylene (PP) is the optimal choice for protection, growers often don’t have it on hand to use for row covers, which is why you will see makeshift DIY row covers made out of alternative fabrics.
However, polypropylene fabrics are recommended for this purpose, as most other types of fabric will become water soaked and too heavy, falling onto your plants and crushing them. Even with support, these fabrics will not let in sufficient water or sunlight that is required by the plant. Also, waterlogged fabrics may get mildewed, which can lead to insect infestations and diseases that you are using row covers to avoid in the first place.
